Information
Operations (IO)
Information is vital to the shaping of the
operational environment, whether at times of peace or during conflict.
Successful decision making to focus effort, power, and forces depends
on an uninterrupted flow of accurate and timely information.
Information superiority means that our information is faster, more
accurate, and more comprehensive than the adversary’s. IO helps us
achieve and maintain information superiority, which gives friendly
forces a great advantage over the enemy.
IO includes those actions that protect our
information and information systems. Unreliable information is worse
than no information, so IO seeks to assure the authenticity and
accuracy of the information processed by our information systems.
JP 3-13 states Information operations (IO)
involve actions taken to affect adversary information and information
systems while
defending one’s own information and information systems.
The Vermont National Guard is leading the
way in training today’s military to provide Information Superiority in
the battlespace of tomorrow. IO training is a joint venture with the
Vermont Air National Guard (VTANG) and Vermont Army National Guard
(VTARNG). The schoolhouse is located in Northfield, Vermont in a brand
new 88,000 square foot facility.
The success of the IO training initiative
in Vermont has sparked interest throughout the entire DoD community.
Additional requirements, in both the Air Force and Army, are being
explored in an effort to expand IO courseware offerings.
